Citizens Police Academy
The City of Waller’s Citizen's Police Academy, a revolutionary concept in law enforcement and police/community relations, is conducting its second academy. The Academy is part of a continuing program designed to develop citizen awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement. The Waller Police Department has created a very informative and interesting program with courses designed for citizens of all backgrounds and occupations. You do not need to be a City of Waller citizen to attend, but you must be 18 years of age or older.
The ten-week/30 hour training program is more informative than the prior academy. Guest speakers will include representatives from Secret Service, Waller and Harris District Attorney Offices, and others agencies. Topics covered include the job of the uniformed patrol officer, traffic enforcement procedures, investigative procedures, tactical operations, laws and legal issues, crime scene processing, firearms and personal safety, special operations, family violence, and identity theft investigations. Students will participate in many interesting activities such as using police equipment, participating in simulated firearms scenes, collecting evidence, and role-playing scenarios.
Graduates of this course will not be police officers or vigilantes, but will be better-informed citizens. The graduates will be in a position to relate their experiences to friends and co-workers, and become volunteers for special citizen projects and programs that will operate in conjunction with the Waller Police Department. Those projects and programs include: Operating the Neighborhood Watch Program, National Night Out program, Crime Prevention Program, and Citizens on Patrol programs.
